CLAO ERF SYMPOSIUM

The CLAO® Education and Research Foundation will hold its biennial Research Symposium on September 23–25, 2010, at Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas. The program is designed for ophthalmologists, optometrists, and scientific researchers interested in the field of contact lenses and anterior segment science. Some of the topics this year include Medical Ethics; Management of Myopia - What’s New in Orthokeratology; Specialty Lenses for Presbyopia and Astigmatism; Improving Contact Lens Success - How to Break the Discomfort Barrier; What’s New in Ocular Microbiology; Contact Lens Solutions: Efficacy and Lens Compatibility; Contact Lenses for Drug Delivery; Complications of Contact Lens Wear; and Contact Lens Safety.

 

Additionally, International Symposia are scheduled along with three invited Lectureships. The ERF Keynote Lecture will be given by Perry Binder, MD; the Oliver H. Dabezies, Jr., MD Lecture will be given by Elmer Tu, MD, and the Harold A. Stein, MD Lecture will be given by Anthony J. Aldave, MD. CLAO leadership regards the biennial symposium as a valuable and vital resource for contact lens professionals.

EYEWIKI LAUNCHED

This month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and key ophthalmic specialty societies and organizations launched EyeWiki, a Wikipedia-like online resource for ophthalmologists and the public. Anyone can view EyeWiki at http://eyewiki.aao.org.  The EyeWiki effort is led by the Editor-in-Chief, Aaron Miller, MD, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Brad Feldman, MD.

 

CLAO ELECTION

The 2010 – 2011 CLAO Election was recently held. Jeanine K. Suchecki, MD, was elected as Vice President; Joseph B. Ciolino, MD and Deepinder K. Dhaliwal, MD, L.Ac were also elected to the Board; and Oliver D. Schein, MD was re-elected to a second term. Vahid Feiz, MD was named by the CLAO Board to fill the un-expired Director-at-Large term of Deborah S. Jacobs, MD, who assumed the position of Chair, Scientific Programs.  Peter R. Kastl, MD, PhD was named Parliamentarian. The CLAO Leadership welcomes these individuals to the Board and thanks all the CLAO Members who returned their completed proxy ballots.

 

EYE AND CONTACT LENS ANNOUNCES NEW EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBERS

Members should periodically check www.ContactLensDocs.com to confirm that their information is correctly listed on the site. In particular, confirm that your own website is accurately linked. As you know, listing on this site is complimentary as a benefit of membership. The site functions in two ways. One is to provide the general public and contact lens patients’ access to generic and accurate information on contact lenses. Secondly, the site is designed for access by the general public allowing them to quickly and easily locate a contact lens doctor in their area.

This all new website features up-to-date product information and resources to assist practitioners with challenging custom fits and prosthetic lens applications. The new website features easy interaction and updated product information and downloads.

Bausch & Lomb announced on June 29th that representatives from the Bausch + Lomb Early Vision Institute and Lions Clubs International Foundation were meeting in Australia to unveil a new global partnership aimed at conquering paediatric cataract. The Pediatric Cataract Initiative (www.PediatricCataract.org) will utilize the resources of both organizations to identify, fund and promote innovative methods of overcoming this challenge for the long-term benefit of children, their families and their communities.  In other news, the company announced that it has appointed Rodney (Rod) W. Unsworth as president, Asia-Pacific, effective July 1, 2010 and has also named Robert E. Grant chief executive officer and president of its global Surgical business, effective August 1, 2010. 

CIBA VISION® ACADEMY FOR EYECARE EXCELLENCE™ has expanded the breadth and reach of its highly-regarded professional education programs with new online learning modules and an "app" for iPhone® users. Eleven online learning modules cover topics ranging from ocular anatomy to multifocal soft lens fitting. Some courses are designated for eye care practitioners and others are designed for staff members. Each learning module takes about 40 minutes to complete, although the user may pause the program at any time, allowing busy practitioners and staff members to complete the work in shorter increments. At the end of the module, the user takes an online test, which is scored instantly. After scoring is complete, the user can print out a certificate of completion that is suitable for framing.  CIBA VISION® has taken its commitment to online learning one step further by offering an iPhone "app" as a no-cost download for ECPs who are iPhone users. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting is scheduled for October 16–19, 2010 in Chicago, IL.  JCAHPO holds its annual ACE meeting in conjunction with the AAO.

The European Contact Lens Society of Ophthalmologists (ECLSO) will be holding its annual meeting September 10–12, 2010 in Warsaw, Poland.

CLAO "DID YOU KNOW?"

CLAO will be hosting two interactive computer-simulation based Contact Lens Skill Transfer Courses at the 2010 American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting.
