A unique scientific symposium entitled “ Ultraviolet Radiation and its Effects on the Human Eye” sponsored by Eye & Contact Lens Journal (ECL) and the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, Inc® (CLAO®) was held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, September 26, 2010. The purpose of this Symposium was to review the latest research on the effects of ultraviolet radiation on the eye.


Thirteen international renowned speakers from countries including the United States, New Zealand, Scotland, Canada, Japan, Britain, Ireland, Australia, and Greece, each presented a 25-minute talk on their area of expertise during the symposium. The following experts presented at the Symposium: Robyn Lucas, MD, PhD, Anthony P. Cullen, OD, PhD, DSc, Mary Norval, PhD, DSc, Vasilis Vasiliou, PhD, Kakarla Chalam, MD, PhD, MBA, Hiroshi Sasaki, MD, Minas T. Coroneo, MD, MSCSYD, FRACS, Randolph D. Glickman, PhD, Joan E. Roberts, PhD, David H. Sliney, PhD, Shambhu D. Varma, PhD, MSc, FARVO, Heather L. Chandler, PhD, FAAO, and James E. Walsh, PhD. Michael H. Goldstein, MD, MBA, CLAO President, Desmond Fonn, DIP. OPTOM, M. OPTOM, Editor-in-Chief of ECL, and Anthony P. Cullen, OD, PhD, DSc were moderators for the Symposium.

Each expert presenter provided a review paper based on their presentation at the Symposium and on their area of expertise within the subject of ultraviolet radiation. This series of review articles will be published in a special issue of Eye & Contact Lens. This Special Issue compilation will serve as the most current and comprehensive stand-alone reference on this important subject. The conference was supported through an unrestricted educational grant to CLAO from The Vision Care Institute, LLC, a Johnson & Johnson Company.


The CLAO® Education and Research Foundation held its biennial Research Symposium September 23–25, 2010, at Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas. The program was designed for ophthalmologists, optometrists, and scientific researchers interested in the field of contact lenses and anterior segment science. Some of the topics this year included: Medical Ethics; Management of Myopia - What’s New in Orthokeratology; Specialty Lenses for Presbyopia and Astigmatism; Improving Contact Lens Success - How to Break the Discomfort Barrier; What’s New in Ocular Microbiology; Contact Lens Solutions: Efficacy and Lens Compatibility; Contact Lenses for Drug Delivery; Complications of Contact Lens Wear; and Contact Lens Safety, JCLS International Symposium and SOBLEC International Symposium. The ERF Keynote Lecture was presented by Perry Binder, MD; the Oliver H. Dabezies, Jr., MD Lecture was presented by Elmer Tu, MD, and the Harold A. Stein, MD Lecture was presented by Anthony J. Aldave, MD. CLAO leadership thanks everyone who attended this biennial symposium.

Mr. Rowe was most recently a senior consultant with Proteus International, Inc., where he advised and assisted organizations undertaking dramatic change initiatives. From 1997 to 1999, Mr. Rowe served as vice president, Human Resources, North America, for Disney Consumer Products, a division of The Walt Disney Co. The 2011 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting is scheduled for November 5–8, in Orlando, FL. JCAHPO holds its annual ACE meeting in conjunction with the AAO.


The 2011 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting is scheduled for March 26–30 in San Diego, CA.

The 2011 Japan Contact Lens Society (JCLS) Annual Meeting is scheduled for July 9–10 in Kyoto, Japan.

The 2011 Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Annual Meeting is scheduled for March 20–24 in Sydney, Australia.

The 2011 SOBLEC Annual Meeting (Brazilian Congress) is scheduled for April 15–17 in Curitiba, Brazil.


The September/October issue of CLAO’s Scientific Journal, Eye and Contact Lens, is a Special Symposium Issue entitled “Trilogy of the Cornea: The Past, Present, and Future.” This Symposium was held to celebrate the retirement and recognize the achievements of Dr. Teruo Nishida from his position as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Yamaguchi University Graduate School of Medicine. The scientific papers presented at this Symposium held in Ube City, Japan, are featured in this Special Symposium Issue.
